Conan O’Brien Reveals His Hilarious Title Choice for NBC’s Late Night Show

Conan O’Brien, the acclaimed comedian and host, is known for his iconic run on NBC’s Late Night, where he hosted more than 2,700 episodes. However, in a recent revelation on the Inside Conan podcast, O’Brien shared that he had a different and humorous title in mind for the show.

“We wanted to call it Nighty Night with Conan O’Brien… It was just really cartoony and funny,” O’Brien chuckled during the podcast produced by his Team Coco.

The discussion between O’Brien and longtime executive producer Jeff Ross delved into the early days of the show, revealing the behind-the-scenes decision-making process. Interestingly, O’Brien expressed concerns about being compared to the show’s predecessor, David Letterman, who hosted the late-night series from 1982 to 1993.

“We had a meeting in this office in 30 Rock that Rick had,” O’Brien recalled, referring to former NBC late-night chief Rick Ludwin, “we were worried about being compared to Letterman and we said that we were thinking of changing the name Late Night. Rick said that [NBC] owns that name, it is a popular franchise, and wouldn’t get rid of it unless there was a spectacular new one and we said we wanted to call it Nighty Night with Conan O’Brien.”

Despite O’Brien’s enthusiasm for the quirky title, Ludwin, described as a “very proper exec” and a “wonderful guy,” gently dissuaded him. The show eventually retained the original name, Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Reflecting on the early days, O’Brien and Ross recalled the freedom they had while putting together the show. Ross humorously admitted, “I spent most of my time faking it and making it look like I knew what I was going until I figured it out.”

As Conan O’Brien fans eagerly anticipate his next project, the comedian is set to embark on a four-part international travelogue, aptly titled Conan O’Brien Must Go.

Despite the alternate title idea, Late Night with Conan O’Brien remains a hallmark in late-night television history, solidifying O’Brien’s status as a beloved and influential comedy icon.
