Google Announces Additional Layoffs, Sparking Employee Backlash

Google is set to lay off several hundred workers, a move that comes just days after the company confirmed job cuts of at least 1,000 employees. The latest layoffs, impacting the sales team, were revealed in a memo circulated by Philipp Schindler, Google’s Chief Business Officer. This restructuring effort focuses on the unit responsible for selling ads to large businesses.

In the memo, Schindler outlined the future role of Google Customer Solutions (GCS) as the core channel for scaling growth, dynamically delivering personalized treatment to each customer. On the other hand, Large Customer Sales (LCS) will concentrate on transformational growth for the largest and most sophisticated clients.

Last week, Google confirmed job cuts in its Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest units, affecting around 1,000 employees. The news of the layoffs was communicated individually to each division, making it challenging to determine the precise number of affected individuals.

Google employees expressed frustration with CEO Sundar Pichai for not publicly addressing the layoffs. Criticism was directed at the “corporate overlords” for allegedly damaging the company’s culture. Internal messages on the company’s meme board reflected discontent among workers.

Managers at Google held Pichai responsible for the layoffs, emphasizing that the decision came from the top. The move sparked memories of last year’s significant round of layoffs, with an engineering director stating that the company’s culture changed dramatically.

Google had laid off around 12,000 workers last year as part of cost-cutting measures anticipated in light of a potential economic downturn. The company’s global workforce was nearly 187,000 at that time.

A Google spokesperson noted that the annual restructuring aims to optimize team structures for improved service to ad customers. The impacted employees, numbering a few hundred globally, will have the opportunity to apply for available roles within the team or elsewhere at Google.

As news of the additional layoffs surfaced, shares of Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc, saw a 0.6% decline in mid-day trading on Tuesday.
