HBO Pulls the Plug: “The Idol” Cancelled After One Season Amid Controversy

HBO Cancels “The Idol” After One Season

HBO has confirmed the cancellation of “The Idol,” a series created by Sam Levinson, the mind behind the successful show “Euphoria,” after just one season. Despite receiving a strong audience response, HBO, the creators, and producers have decided against moving forward with a second season for the show.

“The Idol” depicted the relationship between Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, and self-help guru and cult leader Tedros, portrayed by singer The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye). The show sparked controversy due to its explicit sexual scenes and faced backlash from some viewers. Originally planned for six episodes, the show concluded with five episodes on July 2 and received a low rating of 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sources close to the show revealed that the creators and executive producers did not have a specific plan for a multi-season arc when entering the production process. Conversations about a second season were fluid, and the show ranked among HBO Max’s top series over the summer.

Prior to its HBO release, “The Idol” already made headlines in April 2022 when its original director, Amy Seimetz, stepped down from her role. HBO stated that they were taking the show in a “new creative direction,” which reportedly led to re-filming and re-scripting.

Despite the controversy, Lily-Rose Depp defended the show and praised Sam Levinson for his collaborative approach, stating that working with him was a true partnership where actors’ input and opinions were valued.

The cancellation of “The Idol” highlights the challenges and considerations that go into the decision-making process for television series, especially in terms of content reception and production dynamics.
