Judge Silences President Donald Trump: Gag Order Imposed Ahead of Trial

Former President restricted from commenting on witnesses, prosecutors, and jurors in high-stakes criminal case

A New York judge has imposed a gag order on former President Donald Trump, limiting his ability to comment on witnesses, prosecutors, and jurors involved in the criminal case filed against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The charges against Trump relate to allegations of falsifying business records linked to pre-2016 election payments made by his former lawyer Michael Cohen to Stormy Daniels. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the 34 counts brought against him by Bragg’s office and has consistently denied any involvement with Daniels.

Judge Juan Merchan, who has set the trial to commence on April 15, announced on Tuesday that Trump is prohibited from making statements regarding individuals testifying against him, such as Cohen, who is testifying for the prosecution. Additionally, Trump is barred from commenting on prosecutors and jurors under the terms of the gag order.

Merchan cited Trump’s previous statements about individuals involved in the case as “threatening, inflammatory, denigrating,” and deemed them a significant risk to the administration of justice.

“These inflammatory extrajudicial statements undoubtedly risk impeding the orderly administration of this Court,” Merchan stated. “Given that the eve of trial is upon us, it is without question that the immanency of the risk of harm is now paramount.”

Trump had previously sought to postpone the trial, but Merchan, a donor to President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, dismissed his arguments on Monday.

Before the gag order was imposed, Trump alleged in a Truth Social post that Bragg’s case against him was instigated by the Biden administration and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“D.A. Bragg fought everyone about trying this ‘no crime’ case, but Crooked Joe Biden’s ‘Thugs’ pushed him to go forward, and pushed him hard,” Trump wrote. “They wanted him to go after ME, Crooked’s Political Opponent. He just didn’t want to do it. They ended up sending Matthew Colangelo, Merrick Garland’s ‘right hand,’ after a stop at the Corrupt and Racist New York State A.G. Letecia ‘Peekaboo’ James’ Office, to directly oversee the D.A., perhaps to make sure that Bragg followed their illegal orders and commands. He eventually agreed to do the ‘case’ that he never wanted to do.”

Bragg’s case, widely seen as the weakest against Trump, marked the first instance of criminal charges against a former president and positioned Trump as the first ex-president to face such charges.
