Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of the TV show “Friends,” recently revealed in an interview on the “Today” show that she had a positive conversation with Matthew Perry just two weeks before his untimely death. Perry, who portrayed Chandler Bing on the show for a decade, passed away at the age of 54.
Kauffman shared that during her last conversation with Perry, he appeared happier and in a better place than he had been in a while. She described the chat as “great” and noted that he didn’t seem burdened by anything. The news of Perry’s passing came as a shock to her, and she was deeply saddened by it. She said it’s challenging to comprehend how someone could be here one moment and then gone the next, particularly when they were making a positive impact in the world.
In the interview, Kauffman also mentioned that Perry had been on a journey of self-improvement, focusing on sobriety, quitting smoking, and learning valuable lessons. He had a strong desire to help other addicts, which provided him with a sense of purpose.
David Crane, another co-creator of “Friends,” joined Kauffman for the interview. Crane acknowledged that they were aware of the challenges Perry had faced, and they had braced themselves for such news. He mentioned that it’s difficult to believe that someone as vibrant as Perry is no longer with us.
Matthew Perry was discovered unresponsive in his jacuzzi at his home, with no evidence of illegal substances or foul play. The official cause of his death remains “deferred” until full test results, including toxicology reports, are available, which can take several months. Perry had been candid about his struggles with addiction, including alcohol and prescription painkillers, in the past.
