NowThis Media Hit By Layoffs

NowThis Digital News Outlet Hit by Massive Layoffs, Half of Editorial Team Cut

In a significant restructuring move within the media industry, NowThis, a digital news outlet, has laid off half of its editorial team, according to the union representing the affected staffers.

The Writers Guild of America East (WGA East) reported that 26 out of 50 NowThis members represented by the union were laid off on Thursday. The layoffs were part of a broader initiative described by NowThis as realigning resources and structure to ensure long-term sustainability in the evolving media landscape.

A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document provided to NowThis staffers regarding the layoffs, as obtained by the New York Times, indicated that the decision was strategic and aimed at aligning the workforce with current business needs. The FAQ emphasized the company’s commitment to long-term sustainability and stated that no additional layoffs are currently planned.

NowThis, previously part of Vox Media before becoming independent through a deal with the Accelerate Change media network in April 2023, did not immediately respond to requests for comment from representatives.

Former NowThis employees, including senior producer Jasmine Amjad, news and politics producer Emily Sullivan Barger, supervising producer Mike Madden, and senior writer PJ Evans, publicly shared on social media that they were among those let go.

According to the WGA East, affected members were notified of the layoffs through personal emails after being locked out of work laptops, email, and Slack accounts in the early hours of the morning.

The union expressed concerns about the direction of the company, particularly regarding editorial standards, citing the elimination of the entire copy team, removal of published content, and a significant shift in coverage to attract advertisers.

Despite the shock and impact of the layoffs, the WGA East highlighted the efforts of current and past unit members who advocated for a fair union contract, which includes generous severance packages for affected employees.

The layoffs at NowThis reflect ongoing challenges in the media industry as companies adapt to changing market dynamics and seek to ensure their long-term viability amid evolving audience preferences and economic pressures.
