-LATE TO THE MIRACLE PARTY

Okay. Tom King is amazing on Batman. Because of the bimonthly shipping schedule, he’s already done about half as many issues as Scott Snyder on the title and, like Snyder before him, is forging quite the legacy on the shoulders of the dark knight. As such, I’m hungry to devour anything with King’s name attached to it.

Enter Mister Miracle. My only real exposure to the character before this miniseries was in Seven Soldiers, Grant Morrison’s absurd set of stand-alone minis that were all part of a larger 30-part maxi-series. I loved all of it, but the Mister Miracle series was easily my least favorite chunk and I left with no real affection for the man.

Tom King is working some magic here, bending the confusion and uncertainty that I hated in Seven Soldiers into some rapt storytelling. It’s playing with fun concepts in single issue bursts like a silver age comic while still feeling arthouse, and it’s gorgeous to look at. I’m not here to say it’s going to be as good as All Star Superman, but that’s the last book that had these attributes and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever read.
