Ryan Reynolds Shares Lifelong Battle with Anxiety: A Reminder That High-Functioning Individuals Can Struggle Too

Ryan Reynolds Opens Up About Lifelong Struggles with Anxiety

In an exclusive interview with Page Six, actor Ryan Reynolds shared his lifelong struggles with anxiety. He revealed moments of intense anxiety, such as standing backstage before appearing on a show and fearing that he would vomit or experience something horrible.

Reynolds’ experiences with anxiety are not uncommon. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in three US adults will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. Anxiety disorders can significantly impact an individual’s daily functioning, and almost one in four adults with anxiety disorders experience serious impairment.

Dr. Thea Gallagher, a clinical psychologist specializing in anxiety, pointed out that high-functioning individuals with anxiety often go unnoticed because they appear to be doing well on the surface. Anxiety can deeply affect people in ways that aren’t immediately visible, and some high-functioning individuals might not seek treatment, thinking they are doing okay.

Anxiety disorders are slightly more common in women than in men, and they often manifest in children and adolescents. There are various types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder, each with its unique symptoms.

Ryan Reynolds described some of his coping mechanisms, including rituals that help him stay grounded. Experts recommend stress management techniques, reducing caffeine intake, meditation, and support groups for individuals managing anxiety disorders.

Reynolds also highlighted the importance of meditation to regroup during moments of anxiety. When anxiety begins to significantly affect relationships, work or school performance, or leads to harmful thoughts, seeking professional help is crucial. Treatment options, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and medication, have been effective for managing anxiety.

Gallagher emphasized that anxiety is treatable, and individuals should not suffer in silence. Seeking evaluation and understanding one’s mental health is an essential step toward better mental well-being.
