Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’ Biopic Faces Music Denial Amid Controversy Over Elvis Presley Relationship Portrayal

Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film “Priscilla,” a biopic that explores the relationship between Priscilla Presley and Elvis Presley, faced a setback as their request to use Elvis’ music was denied by Elvis Presley Enterprises, which is 85% owned by Authentic Brands Group and 15% owned by the Presley family. This move comes amidst controversy and criticism surrounding the film’s portrayal of the relationship.

Despite the denial, Coppola expressed understanding, mentioning that Elvis Presley Enterprises is protective of their brand and prefers projects they have originated. To overcome this challenge, Coppola’s husband, Thomas Mars, and his band Phoenix contributed some of the film’s music. Additionally, the film features covers of songs like Frankie Avalon’s “Venus” and an ’80s Ramones cover of the Ronettes’ “Baby, I Love You.”

The film has attracted attention due to its portrayal of the controversial relationship between Priscilla, who was 14 when she met the older Elvis. The movie delves into various aspects of their relationship, including scenes like Elvis picking out Priscilla’s clothes and an intense pillow fight. Priscilla expressed her nervousness about audiences seeing the film, but also noted that it reflects her life accurately.

“Priscilla” is set to hit theaters on October 27, offering a glimpse into the complex and often tumultuous relationship between Priscilla Presley and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
