-COMICS I WISH I WAS LIKING MORE

The tale as old as time itself: a story appeals to you, has a bunch of great moments, and then you realize you’re ten issues in and it still hasn’t hit its stride.

Invincible Iron Man feels like it’s been mining the same moment with no real forward momentum for over half its run now, and eventually it doesn’t matter if I want to see Mary Jane Watson as a puzzle piece in this story, or that I like that a college kid straight built an Iron Man suit and is just figuring things out. I want to see her figure things out! But I won’t, because I’m gone.

All-New, All-Different Avengers has a terrible title but an amazing pedigree. Mark Waid is just coming off my favorite Marvel ongoing of the last two years in Daredevil, and I’m not familiar with Mahmud Asrar outside of ANADA, but his art is wonderful and a perfect fit for this book. On paper, this is a dream team of new heroes getting the shot to be headline, capital-A Avengers, and that’s exactly a thing I want to read. The new Wasp seems great! Shame then that it’s been cold boogers on a paper plate in terms of storylines and excitement level. The one high point, the Vision being a secret baddie that’s tearing the team apart, was set up and resolved so quickly that it stripped it of any potential excitement. There are so many things working for ANADA, between Cap and Thor’s budding friendship and/or romance, Vision’s cold-hearted approach, and the three kids being SO PUMPED to be there. But at the end of the day I don’t care like I should, and if I don’t care by now there’s something wrong.

These comics should be brimming with magic, but there’s something missing. Me. Because I’m saving 8 dollars next month instead of giving them another ten issues to find the magic.
