-CIVIL WAR II: ZERO
Don’t get me wrong. Civil War II #0 was not a bad comic. It just felt so utterly skippable that I found myself wishing I had done just that. In a way you have no choice but to make a zero issue unnecessary because some people will buy issue 1 and have missed critical story and that’s not fair. I think what really hammered my bad feelings for this book home was that it took place before the Free Comic Book Day tie-in that came out weeks ago. So thousands of people were dropped into a story before they introduced the most crucial character, some stuff happened to set up the main story, and then if they bought #0 they got to learn who he is.
It’s like when a TV channel doesn’t believe in a show and they run a stronger episode first to try to get people hooked, then they slide the pilot in later, and anyone who actually enjoyed what they watched feels confused meeting these characters for the first time after having already seen them in action. Now I don’t think Civil War II will underperform because of this in the way Firefly and shows like it may have, but the dissonance is still there and it hurt my experience. If you have the choice, read #0 before FCBD. Maybe then it’ll fall together in a nicer way.
